Hey all,
New to the forums here, I belive my Step Brother was talking to Haulage, we bought two tanks (frames only) from Palmerston Nth..
I think they are both "JJ" Chassis. Basically the same proportions.
Just wondering what your thoughts are on the mounting of the frame to the running gear , as I've seen many different ways of mounting them.
1) Remove "RC chassis" , mount all components onto flat plate (Including removing front suspension, mounting to box section) . 2) Mount "RC chassis" to a flat plate (sheetmetal thickness), that spans the width of the metal frame. 3) Mount "Rc chassis" to strips of 3-4mm thick metal bands and mount that to the frame.
I had mounted this old Tamiya Chassis to the frame, weighed all up 3.0 kgs. Got it going with some flat old batteries, was rather slow (get that with an old car). I had major headaches getting this old tamiya chassis to fit, including taking 1.5cm out of the bathtub chassis itself, relocating shock mounts etc etc. (Rear wheels were within 1-2mm from rails..
Have since decided to remove that, and currently bidding on a much newer 4wd electric off roader.
Also I was wondering what your cars weigh all race ready ? Particularly interisted to know what one of those alloy chassis would weigh ?
Oh and what numbers cant I have (1,2,3 obvisously) ?
Thinking either 0c or 53c if thats alright.
Cheers,Chris

Hey Chris, without seeing pics of the tanks or knowing what type of running gear you have, it's hard to say how to mount running gear. Whatever donor car I use (mostly tt-01 or DF-02) I attach it to a 3mm alloy plate, and build a chassis around the gear to suit. Much easier than trying to make gear fit a chassis. Have you tried mounting a Hornet/Grasshopper diff? They fit most designs. Most of my cars weigh between 3.2kgs to 3.7kgs. Nice safe weight. Any lighter and you cant attack people as the car just seems to bounce off, and any heavier they seem to loose there agility to attack quickly. Hope this helps. Cheers, Slick

Not sure on the type of Offroader, but I suspected Grass Hopper or Hornet (Black bathtub chassis, Orange wheels). Either way its track was too wide for the tank chassis, even with grinding down the plastic hubs ...

That rear end came with the car, although a regular tamiya motor wont fit - even with a motor spacer my small cog was still rubbing on something. As you can see its missing two drive Cogs anyway.. This Rear end was attached to the chassis below, Its too wide, the wheels only just fit, but rub exceedingly badly, fronts would be even easier targets they stick out inline with the siderails.. You can see where I've shortened it and stuck it back together - Some steel resin stuff.. (about 1-2cm out of the length of the chassis itself , removed original shock mounts off the diff & Relocated shocks onto diff, front bumper removed also) The Tank itself, can see some of the weight reduction Also the two brackets I've put in, one by the front is for mounting the shocks onto, the one at end of the thingypit is for the bonnet mounting.. Underside... Cheers,Chris

well first of that,That red diff is from a TA01 or TA02,Probly wont help if you dont have the proper motor mount for it,The black diff is a hornet or somthing from the same era,All the same pretty much, would be fine if you shorten it down just on one side,Or even redrill some new holes on the axle to reposistion the hex hubs where you need them,And then can run Touring car rims on it and then setup yourself a custom front end

Nah, there is literally 1-2mm Clearance either side, and I'd already shaved the plastic hubs down , and it was still rubbing. Anyone want to buy some parts ? Cheers,Chris

Keep the grasshopper diff. They are almost bulletproof. Two Chch cars run them down your way, Haulage and Maddog have them! They may want a spare?

Nothing wrong with the diff,This car here is running one of them sam diffs,And hes jsut redrilled the holes in the axles so he could run touring car rims,That way you can choose how far out the rims will sit

Hey thanks for the offer, Im going up to hanmer (along with the other guy that purchased the other tank) Till monday, then wrecking a Gemini on Tuesday with some luck. Im picking up a another chassis today, was in a Model store and saw this 2nd hand one there - road car, and Asked attendant, didnt know much, told me to ring when he's there, Scored for $10 - Incl Shocks, Wheels, Steering etc etc.
Will post pics up asap. Am thinking of mounting the chassis to the car with some Polypropelene (think coloured Lexan) ..
Cheers,Chris

Above pic kinda shows how it goes together - kinda... Scored this today, I basically need a whole rear axle & hubs (Still no rear wheels as of yet! Grr) The "Axle" can be made out of anything really, stainless, alloy, even plastic, it only has to be straight and fit through the bearings. Then there is a Small Hub that is connected either end, tightened by a grub screw, Next comes a washer, then the drive cog, then another washer, then the big hub (obvisously just one big hub at the other end).. If anyone has any parts that may fit, I'd be keen to buy them/swap for any bits I have that you may want. Cheers,Chris
